The Boundary Fares claims were filed in the Competition Appeal Tribunal by Justin Gutmann on behalf of millions of rail passengers who have paid twice for part of their journeys. If you travelled on the South Western, Southeastern, Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern or Gatwick Express routes, you could be entitled to claim compensation.

The train operators of the South Western, Southeastern, Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern and Gatwick Express routes are alleged to have not made ‘boundary’ fares readily available for Travelcard holders to purchase, nor making passengers aware of their existence. This has resulted in some customers buying a fare that also covers part of the journey on which their Travelcard already entitled them to travel.

Boundary fares allow passengers who own a Travelcard to travel beyond the zones covered by their Travelcard, paying only for the journey falling outside of the zones covered by their Travelcard. Independent research has shown that boundary fares are not readily available from the operators of these routes through any of the surveyed online platforms or surveyed telephone-based customer services and are not typically offered at ticket counters unless the passenger mentions holding a Travelcard.

It is alleged that this imposition constitutes an unfair price for fares and is an abuse of the companies’ dominant position and in breach of competition law.
